expand/collapse Expand/collapse Biographical Information

Frederick George Bromberg was born in New York City, 19 June 1837, and moved with his parents to Mobile, Alabama, in 1838. He graduated from Harvard University in 1858, and studied and tutored there, 1861-1865.

Bromberg held a number of political positions in Mobile following the Civil War: treasurer of Mobile, 1867-1869; state senator, 1868-1872; postmaster of Mobile, 1869-1871; and U.S. Representative, 1873-1875. He was a Liberal Republican.

Bromberg was admitted to the bar in 1877 and began practicing in Mobile. He remained an active lawyer in his own office, and served as president of the state bar in 1906. He died in Mobile, 4 September 1930.

Information for this note was taken from The Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774-1989.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Scope and Content

This collection consists chiefly of papers relating to Bromberg's legal cases in Mobile, Alabama, 1877-1924. Most of these cases dealt with real estate sales or inheritance, and the papers are largely routine. Small amounts of material appear relating to Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau, Alabama politics, and the Cedral mines in Mexico. These items are imbedded in large amounts of other material; however, they can be accessed by keeping in mind the dates of the items: Reconstruction material is chiefly in the late 1860s, and Mexican revolution material peaks in 1911.

The correspondence and legal documents relating to Bromberg's cases have been divided into subseries based on phases of Bromberg's career. Bills and receipts have been separated from other material, and are not chronologically arranged; these items also relate to Bromberg's clients. Series also appear for miscellaneous personal items, and for pictures.
