Columbus Morrison (1808-1862) was a native of Mecklenburg County, N.C. He was educated at the University of North Carolina and was a teacher at Leesburg, Va. He studied medicine at Charleston, S.C., and practiced in Charlotte, N.C., later operating a drug store there. He became a farmer near Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1835. In 1858 he moved to Marietta, Ga., and remained there for the rest of his life. He was married first to Sarah Johnston (died 1844) and then to Jane M. Young.

The collection includes record books and a few miscellaneous letters of Columbus Morrison. Volumes include an autobiography, farm and family memoranda, and diary, 1845-1846, kept near Tuscaloosa, Ala.; a family and plantation account books near Marietta, Ga., 1859-1862; and an intermittent memoranda, 1847-1862, at both locations, including information about Civil War military activities, especially in the Missouri area.
