John Q. Winfield (1822-1892) was a physician of Broadway, Va. In 1860, he received a commission from Governor Letcher of Virginia as captain of Brock's Gap Riflemen. Winfield later joined General Turner Ashby at Romney, Va. (now West Virginia), as captain of Company B of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, C.S.A. Winfield resigned his commission in 1862 due to his health, whereupon he returned to Broadway to work as a physician and act as captain of the the Valley Home Guards.

The collection consists of letters from John Q. Winfield to his wife Sallie Neff Winfield at Cootes Store, Rockingham County, Va., and Woodstock, Va., while he served in the Shenandoah Valley and western Virginia (especially near Romney, Va., now in West Virginia) early in the Civil War. Winfield was captain of Company B of the 7th Virginia Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., under his friend, General Turner Ashby. The letters discuss, sometimes in detail, military movements and personnel, and encounters with Union forces.
