The Hallett (or Hallet) and Howes families were seafarers of Dennis, Cape Cod, Mass. Family members mentioned in the papers include Laban Howes (fl. 1879), Augustus Hallet (fl. 1860-1869), Jonathan Howes, Alexander Howes, Willis Howes, Cyrus Howes, Persis Howes, J. C. Howes, Cora Howes, Labe Howes, and Calvin C. Howes.

The collection includes papers of the Hallett (or Hallet) and Howes families. The bulk are papers of several generations of the Howes family, including correspondence, children's compositions, bills, receipts, business letters, a household account book, 1866, and a diary kept by Laban Howes on a voyage on a cargo ship from Boston, Mass., 1869. Also included are bills, receipts, correspondence, a ship inventory, and hand-marked sea charts of Captain Augustus Hallet, 1860-1869. There is also an unrelated New Orleans, La., city bond, 1862.
