Size 45 items
Abstract The Wright family and Herring family were joined by the marriage of Bettie Herring, a school teacher of Mount Olive, N.C., to John C. Wright in 1867. The collection contains scattered family correspondence including letters received by Bettie Herring from Confederate soldiers, letters from relatives in Carroll County, Miss., and other places in the lower South, and letters concerning her school teaching. Letters from soldiers deal largely with courtship, but some deal with such military matters as camp life at Drewry's Bluff, Va., August 1863, and the sinking of the C.S.S. Albemarle, October-November 1864. Family letters deal chiefly with family events and community life.
