Larkin Newby (1781-1824) was a merchant and state legislator of Fayetteville, N.C. In 1806 he married Cecilia Pearce, daughter of Mary West and Oliver Pearce, granddaughter of Revolutionary leader and astronomer Benjamin West (1730-1813). They had four children: Blakely, Mary (born 1819), Thompson, and George Clinton (born 1822) Newby.

The collection is chiefly personal letters received by Larkin Newby from friends and relatives, some of whom were also merchants, discussing business, personal matters, and public affairs. Most correspondents were in Georgia, particularly Vienna, and other places in the South, but some were Newby's wife's relatives in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, among them her grandfather, Benjamin West, chiefly concerning family affairs. Letters after 1824 are addressed to Larkin Newby's wife, Cecilia, and his daughter, Mary, and are primarily from family and friends. Also included are miscellaneous business papers; Newby's autobiography (3 pages) up to 1793; a religious notebook, 1816; a diary by Newby of a sojourn at various Virginia springs, 1823; and anonymous reminiscences of school days in Fayetteville in the 1820s and 1830s.
