Abstract Edmund Ruffin Beckwith (1890-1949) was a New York City lawyer. The collection includes papers accumulated by Edmund R. Beckwith while he was researching biographical information on his ancester, John Wright Stanly (1742-1789), merchant and Revolutionary patriot of New Bern, N.C. Included are papers of John Beckwith (1785-1870), physician of Raleigh, N.C., and Petersburg, Va., and his wife, Margaret, daughter of J.W. Stanly; papers of Harvey Stanly, Episcopal minister of New Bern and Elizabeth City, N.C., and Somerset County, Md., of his wife, Mary Ann, and of her father, C.R. Kinney (d. 1845), lawyer and legislator of Elizabeth City; scattered papers, chiefly typed transcripts and photocopies, of other members of the Stanly family; and correspondence, 1924-1949, of E.R. Beckwith and family members and research assistants about J.W. Stanly and his descendants.

Arrangement: chronological.

The early correspondence consists chiefly of typed copies and photostats of letters of the Stanly family. Beginning in 1832, there are papers of C.R. Kinney, lawyer of Elizabeth City, N.C., and his son-in-law, Harvey Stanly, Episcopal minister and grandson of John Wright Stanly. After Kinney's death in 1845, the letters are those of other members of the Stanly family. In 1924, Beckwith began work on Stanly and letters consist of correspondence connected with his research.
