According to Battle's History, John Sprunt Hill (1869-1961) offered an annual prize of fifteen dollars for the best essay on a topic of North Carolina history on the occasion of his class reunion at the commencement of 1891. It was given from 1892 through at least 1903, after which it was apparently replaced by the Hill Fellowship and other endowments in the field of North Carolina history, law, etc.
The winners of this prize were:
1892: Leonard C. Van Noppen won the "History Prize"; Edwin M. Wilson won the Charles G. Hill prize
1893: F. L. Wilcox won the "History Prize"
1894: William Cunningham Smith won the "Hill History Prize"
1895: Charles F. Tomlinson

1897: John Gilchrist McCormick
1898: Pleasant Daniel Gold, Jr.
