Abstract John Houston Thorpe (1840-1932) of Rocky Mount, N.C., was a teacher, lawyer, farmer, state senator, and Confederate soldier. The collection includes a detailed letter, 20 June 1861, from Thorpe, while serving with the 47th North Carolina Regiment at Yorktown, Va., describing the Battle of Big Bethel (Bethel Church), 1861; a brief note, 8-9 May 1864, from Bennett Bunn and Benjamin Bunn to Mrs. Sallie Eliza Bunn; and photocopies of biographical items concerning John H. Thorpe.

John Houston Thorpe (1840-1932) of Rocky Mount, N.C., was a teacher, lawyer, farmer, and state senator. He also served in the Confederate army, 47th North Carolina Regiment. He married Sallie Eliza Bunn in 1866.
