Abstract Laura Noell Carr, of Durham, N.C., was married to Austin Heaton Carr (1894-1942), president of Durham Hosiery Mills. They had two children, Austin Heaton Carr Junior (born 1920) and Charles Noell Carr (born circa 1930). The collection includes letters to Laura Noell Carr from her sons and other papers. Austin Heaton Carr Junior's letters during World War II describe his experiences in Officer Candidate School in Miami Beach, Fla., in 1943, and as a supply officer in France and Germany; and mention missions of his unit, the 396th Fighter Squadron, United States Army Air Forces. Later letters describe his life and his work in advertising in New York City after the war. Charles Noell Carr's letters describe his life as a student at Woodberry Forest School, Woodberry Forest, Va., and Harvard University, 1945-1947. Also included are scattered letters to and from friends, including Frank Borden Hanes, Josephus Daniels, and Lady Nancy Astor; clippings; and memorabilia.

Laura Noell Carr, of Durham, N.C., was educated at Randolph-Macon College in Lynchburg, Va. She was married to Austin Heaton Carr (1894-1942), president of Durham Hosiery Mills. They had two children, Austin Heaton Carr Junior (born 1920) and Charles Noell Carr (born circa 1930). After her husband's death Laura married Robert Hett Chapman, textile industrialist of Spartanburg, S.C.

The collection is primarily letters to Laura Noell Carr of Durham, N.C., from her sons, Austin Heaton Carr Junior and Charles Noell Carr.
