Abstract | The Herring family of Scotland Neck, Halifax County, N.C., included John Robert Herring, his wife, and their children. The collection includes correspondence of John Herring and his family, especially his daughter Mattie Herring Josey; family financial and legal papers; school reports; and obituaries. The correspondence deals largely with routine family matters, but includes letters from a student at Wake Forest College in the 1890s and letters, 1889, reflecting on life in the North Carolina Insane Asylum in Raleigh, N.C., from a patient there. |

Members of the Herring family of Scotland Neck, Halifax County, N.C., included John Robert Herring (died 1894); his wife, Cornelia Whitaker Herring (died 1889); their children, John Robert Junior (1862-1883), William, Charles, and Mattie. Mattie Herring was married to James L. Josey in 1890 and they had a daughter, Cornelia.
