| Abstract | F. Stuart Chapin, noted urban and regional planner, whose primary research interests included urban and regional growth systems and human activity patterns. Chapin was professor of urban and regional planning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also founded and directed the Center for Urban and Regional Studies and worked with the Institute for Research in Social Science. Correspondence, research materials, reports, speeches, and published writings of Chapin. Correspondence, 1944-1977, is chiefly between Chapin and professional colleagues, but contains little substantive discussion. Materials relating to the Center for Urban and Regional Studies, 1954-1970s, consists primarily of reports on the Center's work. There are also items from the 1960s relating to Chapin's investigation of the urban growth of the Piedmont Crescent region in North Carolina and a collection of research questionnaires used by Chapin in various studies. Writings include papers and speeches presented at professional meetings from the 1950s through the 1970s and reprints and preprints of articles and printed reports from the 1940s through the 1970s. Topics covered include city and regional planning, land use, time management, and the work of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies and the Institute for Research in Social Science. |
