• John Minott Rivers, Jr., Papers (#4757)

Moultrie Rutledge Rivers was born in Mount Pleasant, S.C., on 13 May 1868, the son of Constant Henry and Mary Elizabeth Minott Rivers. He received an A.B. degree from the College of Charleston in 1890 and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in the same year. He married Eliza Ingraham Buist on 2 February 1893. The couple had five children: Mary Edwards (Mrs. Charles Webb), Moultrie Rutledge, George Lamb Buist, John Minott, and Arthur Lee.

After working with several other law firms, Rivers became a member of the Charleston firm of Hagood, Rivers & Young in 1913 and served as corporate counsel for the City of Charleston from 1918 to 1920. He was also a director of the South Carolina Power Company, the Atlantic National Bank of Charleston, and the Citizens and Southern Bank of South Carolina. He was a member of the Charleston Port Utilities Commission, serving as chair in 1923, and of the boards of trustees of the College of Charleston and the Medical College of South Carolina. He served as chair of the Board of Public School Commissioners and was a member of the South Carolina Board of Education.

Rivers was active in Democratic Party politics, serving as chair of the Democratic Executive Committee of the City of Charleston. He was an Episcopalian and a Mason, and co-authored a history of the St. Andrew's Society of Charleston, S.C., published in 1929.

The collection includes correspondence relating to M. Rutledge Rivers's solicitation of support from political allies for his son, Buist Rivers, who was seeking the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee of the South Carolina legislature; a yearbook celebrating the centennial of the High School of Charleston, Charleston, S.C., of which Rivers was then president of the board of trustees; miscellaneous items relating to the Masons; a certificate of membership on the South Carolina State Board of Education; and a microfilm copy of a letterpress copybook, ca. 700 pages, containing business letters, 1 March 1894-28 October 1898. The letters relate to legal actions Rivers undertook on behalf of various clients. An index to correspondents is included in the front of the volume.
