70 items.

Arrangement: chronological.

Correspondence, 1902-1955, and financial and legal papers, 1911-1929, of the Harkrader family of North Carolina, Indiana, and Virginia, with a few items pertaining to the Lloyd family of Virginia. The bulk of the letters are dated 1902-1934 and were received or written by four generations of the women in the Harkrader family. There are also a few letters, 1925-1929, addressed to W. Trent Harkrader. The letters are love letters, family letters, and letters from friends. There are no letters from 1906-1910, 1913-1919, 1922, 1926, 1933, or 1935-1954. Financial and legal papers document primarily the purchase of land in Yadkin County, N.C.

Most of the early letters, 1902-1905, were written to Margaret (Maggie) Harkrader in Dobson, N.C., and later in Moser, N.C., by friends and suitors, many of them schoolteachers in various North Carolina locations. They give personal and family news and describe the difficulties of teaching. Many are love letters. In 1904, Lillian Harkrader, while teaching in Mt. Airy, N.C., received several letters from her mother Mrs. L. V. Harkrader of Dobson, giving advice and news of the family. Two letters, 15 January 1904 and 18 August 1911, addressed to William Fletcher Lloyd of Rural Retreat, Va., discuss Lloyd family history.

Letters, 1923-1925, are primarily to Vena Harkrader, a student at the North Carolina College for Women in Greensboro, N.C., from her mother Lela Harkrader in New Castle, Ind.; her grandmother Mrs. L. V. Harkrader, her aunt Lillian Harkrader in Dobson; "Grandma" Lakey in Durham, N.C.; her aunt Rachel in Rural Retreat; and several friends. The letters provide news of relatives and acquaintances in several Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia locations. Other letters from the early 1920s include three, 1920-1923, from Lela Harkrader to her mother-in-law Mrs. L.V. Harkrader, giving family news and discussing the death of Mrs. Harkrader's son Kenny. A believer in spiritualism, Lela reported that she and her family communicated regularly with Kenny through the spirit world. Also Tishia Harkrader in Dobson, N.C., wrote several letters in 1924 to her sister Rachel in Rural Retreat, Va., discussing Rachel's stay in the hospital and Tishia's work as a clerk in Dobson. A brief note, 11 November 1925, appears from F. W. Harkrader in Kokomo, Ind., to his brother W. Trent Harkrader, a student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.

All letters dated between 1927 and 1929 are to W. Trent Harkrader from friends and family (including his sister Vena Harkrader and his mother Mrs. L. V. Harkrader) and discuss his finances while a student at the University of North Carolina, social life, teaching in North Carolina public schools, and Dobson politics. Letters, 1930-1934, are to Margaret Harkrader, a student at the North Carolina College for Women who later worked in Booneville, N.C. Most of these are from her mother Lela Harkrader, who wrote from Richmond, Va., and later from Dobson to give advice and news of the family.

A final letter, dated 1955, was written from Atlantic City, Fla., by Maria Luis Astronga (relation to the Harkrader family unknown) to a female friend in school at the University of North Carolina.

Financial and legal papers are mostly tax and other receipts, 1923-1929. Also included are a certificate of sale, 1928, related to W. Trent Harkader's purchase of land in Yadkin County, N.C.; a dry-goods account statement, 1911, for William Fletcher Lloyd; and a receipt, 1921, for the purchase of furniture by Lillian Harkrader.
