Aldred Adino Pruden, was born in Virginia in 1866 and educated at the Suffolk Military Academy. He graduated from the Theological Seminary of virginia in 1894 and was ordained an Episcopal minister. He enlisted in Durham, N.C., as a chaplain in the 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War. He served in this capacity from 1898 to 1899. In 1901, Pruden was transferred and served in the Philippines and Hawaii Territory. Promoted to the rank of major in 1911, he became commandant of the Training School for Chaplains and Approved Chaplain Candidates, Camp Taylor, Ky., in 1918. At the end of World War I, Pruden was transferred and received the rank of lieutenant colonel on 4 June 1920. In 1922, he retired from active duty. Pruden died in 1942 and was buried in Arlington Cemetery.

Military papers relating to the career of Lieutenant Colonel A. A. Pruden, chaplain in the 1st North Carolina Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; in other units of the United States Army in the Philippines and Hawaii Territory; as commandant of the Training School for Chaplains and Approved Chaplain Candidates, Camp Taylor, Ky., during World War I; and at other locations until his retirement in 1922. Included are letters of promotions, military personnel records, correspondence regarding military matters, and a few items relating to the role of military chaplains. Most of the materials concern personnel actions, such as transfers and promotions, affecting Pruden and to his handling of funds.
