| Abstract | Henry K. White was mustered into the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment on 21 September 1861. He served both in the infantry and in the regimental band through the invasion of Roanoke Island; the Union occupation of New Bern, N.C.; and the campaign against Richmond, Va., in 1864. The collection contains two Civil War diaries with entries, 1861-1864, composed during Henry K. White's service in the United States Army as a fife player in the regimental band of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The diaries detail military life; his participation in the invasion of Roanoke Island; and his part in the occupation of New Bern, N.C. The diaries also include documentation of White's service in the campaign leading to the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in 1864, a list of correspondence received by White during his service, addresses of some of White's army comrades, and notations showing anniversaries of various historical events. |

Biographical Information
Henry K. White of Shirley, Mass., was mustered into the 23rd Massachusetts Volunteers on 21 September 1861. He played fife in the regimental band. In February 1862, he shipped out with his unit for the North Carolina coast and participated in the seizure of Roanoke Island by Union troops on 8 February 1862. For the next several months, White and his unit were camped in and around New Bern, N.C., but saw little action. At the beginning of 1864, White and his unit moved north to participate in the Spotsylvania campaign.

Scope and Content
