George Dewey Crawford was born in Cornelia, Ga., at the end of the 19th century. After attending Cornelia public schools with his brothers, Todd, Vernon, and Kenneth, he moved on to Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill as a member of the class of 1920. Crawford was active in the school, serving on the staff of several student publications, including, "The Magazine," where he held the post of business manager. His other affiliations included the Dialectic Literary Society, the Debating Council, Epsilon Phi Delta, and several sports teams. Crawford was also the president of the YMCA and served as a lieutenant in the student battalion. He was also very active in the theater. He took part in many of the student productions put on at UNC and was a member of the Carolina PlayMakers, along with Thomas Wolfe and future Pulitzer Prize winner Paul E. Green. After graduation from UNC, Crawford attended Emory University's Law School. He moved to Fort Pierce, Fla., in 1923, to practice law. Crawford married Mary Creech Williams and had several children, including Mildred Crawford McTureous and John and Robert Crawford.

The George Dewey Crawford scrapbook primarily relates to Crawford's years as a student at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C., 1918-1920. There are, however, a small number of items from his childhood and family; his education at Piedmont College; and his post-UNC activities, including a class reunion, in 1921. His activities at UNC are documented with clippings, broadsides, programs, tickets, photographs, letters, writings, fabric swatches, banners, stationery, receipts, postcards, and other items from his participation in societies; student publications; clubs; sports teams; the student battalion; the 8th International Student Volunteer Convention in Des Moines, Iowa; and university theatrical productions. Photographs include candid shots of Crawford and his friends on campus, sporting events, and his future wife Mary Creech Williams. Her Bride Book is also included in the file of enclosures. The largest number of images are of campus theatrical productions in which Crawford participated. There is a photograph of Paul Green and several pages of signatures and toasts, among them one from Thomas Wolfe.
