Abstract The Hooper family of Alabama included Caroline Alice Hooper, Charles Mallett Hooper, John DeBerniere Hooper, and their cousin Fanny DeBerniere Hooper Whitaker of North Carolina. The collection contains correspondence, genealogical research materials, biographical materials, pictures, and other papers relating to various members of the Hooper family. Correspondence between various members of the Hooper family documenting family happenings, financial affairs, and business transactions dates from 1829 through 1941, with the bulk dating from the 1890s through 1941. Numerous letters are addressed to John DeBerniere Hooper and Caroline Alice Hooper from family and acquaintances, including members of the Hooper, Waddell, Hough, and Collier families. Also included is correspondence between Charles Mallett Hooper and his cousin Fannie DeBerniere Hooper Whitaker concerning his service in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Genealogical and biographical materials concern the Hooper, Mallett, Waddell, DeBerniere, Maclaine, and Nash families. Pictures include individual and group portraits of family members.

George DeBerniere Hooper (1809-1892) and his wife Caroline Eliza Mallett Hooper (1814-1875) were originally from North Carolina. They moved to Alabama and eventually settled in Opelika, where George Hooper practiced law. George DeBerniere Hooper was the son of Archibald Maclaine Hooper (1775-1853) and Charlotte DeBerniere Hooper of Wilmington, N.C. Caroline Eliza Mallett Hooper was the daughter of Charles Peter Mallett (1792-1874) and Sophia Sarah Beatty Mallett of Fayetteville, N.C.

George and Caroline Hooper had nine children. Sophia Betty, Charlotte, Archibald Maclaine, William, and Caroline Mallett all died during childhood. George William Hooper (1839-1883) served as a lieutenant colonel in the Confederate Army. Charles Mallett Hooper (1842-1910) served as a captain in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment, where he suffered wounds to his face that plagued him for the remainder of his life. Following the war, he practiced law, eventually moving to Jacksonville, Fla., where he died in 1910. John DeBerniere was involved in mining, serving as the Chief Mine Inspector for the State of Alabama. Caroline Alice never married and maintained close ties with her family, including members of the Hooper family in North Carolina, and various members of the Waddell, Mallett, Maclaine, and Nash families.

Correspondence between various members of the Hooper family, dating from 1829 through 1941, with the bulk of the correspondence dating from the 1890s through 1941. Correspondence documents family happenings, including travels, illnesses, education, family history, and other family news; financial affairs, including property and rents; and business transactions. Numerous letters are addressed to John DeBerniere Hooper and Caroline Alice Hooper from family and acquaintences, including members of the Hooper, Waddell, Hough, and Collier families. Also included is correspondence between Charles Mallett Hooper and his cousin Fannie DeBerniere Hooper Whitaker concerning his service in the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.

Letters are filed in chronological order except for some which were received already sorted by correspondent or subject, including Caroline Collier, Nash Collier, John DeBerniere Hooper, Nancy R. Hooper, A. S. Hough, DeBerniere Hough, and Caroline and Howard Mann. These groups were kept together and filed after the chronological files. Additional correspondence for these individuals may also be found in the chronological files.
