Abstract | Blaise Motte was born in France and emigrated to America around 1828. He kept a general store in Washington, Saint Landry Parish, La., from the late 1840s until the mid-1870s. A number of his customers were African Americans. The collection contains a general store ledger, 1869-1875, kept by Motte; a loose ledger sheet; and miscellaneous enclosures from the early 20th century. The ledger is organized by customer names and includes dates, items and amounts purchased, and prices. Entries are in English and French. |
