Abstract | Lemuel Main served as a corporal in Company C of the 145th Ohio Infantry Regiment (National Guard) during the Civil War. He was stationed at Fort Albany, Va., and Fort Whipple, Va. His wife, Sallie Ann Grant Main, and daughter, Ava L. Main, lived in Leonardsburg, Delaware County, Ohio. Their nephew, John M. Cole, served with Lemuel in the 145th. The collection consists of correspondence dated 1858 and 1864 between Lemuel Main and Sallie Ann Grant Main in Leonardsburg, Delaware County, Ohio, concerning courtship; family and social news, including gossip; instructions for looking after the home and farm; and news of military life, chiefly sickness among soldiers. Also included are courtship letters, 1858-1859, from John T. Buck to Sallie Ann Grant; letters, 1864, from her nephew, John M. Cole, who was also in camp with Lemuel, including one that mentions a "village of Blacks here"; an undated letter with gossip from "Margaret," and three letters, 1875-1889, to Alice C. Buchanan of Wooster, Ohio, from Hattie Buck, J.M. Gault, and Emma W. Shipley, that provide news of social visits, weddings, divorces, and sickness. |
