| Abstract | Richard L. Brindley grew up on the family plantation in Wilmington, Del. Never married, he enlisted in the Union Army on 3 May 1861 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd Deleware Infantry Regiment. On 14 May 1861, he was promoted to first lieutenant and was promoted to captain on 15 March 1862. Brindley was killed in action on 27 June 1862 while leading a charge during the Battle of Gaines's Mill in Virginia and was posthumously promoted to the rank of major. The diary contains brief entries documenting the early weeks of the Civil War, 17 May-12 August 1861, and includes a description of the First Battle of Bull Run on 21 July 1861. Entries also document movement between various Army forts, including Fort Columbus, N.Y., Fort Hamilton, N.Y., Annapolis, Md., and others; visits with family members, particularly Brindley's brother-in-law and distant cousin Henry C. Thomas, son of Lincoln's Adjutant General Lorenzo Thomas; and activities during leaves of absence. There are also short tallies of expenses and a few pages listing prisoners and their offenses. |

Biographical Information
Richard L. Brindley (1831-1862) was the only son of James Joseph Brindley (1783-1858) and Hanna Baker (1797-1872). He had three older sisters: Elizabeth, Rebecca, and Sallie. Richard Brindley's grandfather, James Brindley (1745-1820), was a canal engineer who immigrated to the United States from England in 1774 and settled in Wilmington, Del., where he started a plantation and owned a small number of slaves.
