Marsha Tinnen worked as a housekeeper at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a member of the Housekeepers Association she advocated for better working conditions, pay, and benefits for housekeepers during the 1990s and early 2000s. In 1996, she and Barbara Prear led a housekeepers strike that resulted in the UNC Housekeepers' Settlement Agreement. In 1997, the Housekeepers Association joined with a larger group of University of North Carolina system employees to form UE 150, a UNC Chapel Hill chapter of the North Carolina Public Service Workers Union.
