expand/collapse Expand/collapse Biographical Information

Andy Cahan was born in New York in 1958. After having played several instruments since early childhood, he took up the banjo at age 14, subsequently becoming interested in old-time southern mountain music. In the 1970s the old-time music scene in New York City was flourishing and Andy became a participant, playing at square dances at the South Street Seaport, workshops at the Folklore Center, and on the street corners of Manhattan. In 1976 he was one of the featured players on the album Melodic Clawhammer Banjo on Kicking Mule Records. In 1978 he played banjo on the album Ship In the Clouds on Folkways.

During a 1979 trip to Mt. Airy N.C., Andy was invited to join and play banjo with Earnest East's The Pine Ridge Boys and Patsy, a long established traditional string band. After graduating from Oberlin College Andy moved to the South to assume that role and to immerse himself in old-time music. He supported himself doing maintenance work, carpentry, and woodworking while living in the foothills and mountains of North Carolina and Virginia. For most of the 1980s, Andy focused on spending time with the oldest remaining traditional musicians, in particular in the Grayson-Carroll County, Va. area. He lived in Galax, Va. for over 5 years, recording hundreds of hours of music and conversations with musicians in southwest Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia, as well as at fiddler's conventions and other local events.

Andy played and travelled extensively with Tommy Jarrell, Clyde Davenport, The Pine Ridge Boys and Patsy, Carlie Marion, and others. He accompanied numerous traditional musicians including Walter Raleigh Babson, Parley Parsons, Earnest East and Pine Ridge Boys and Patsy, Tommy Jarrell, Carlie Marion, Albert Hash, Luther Davis, and Roscoe Parish on issued recordings. Additionally, the Field Recorders Collective has issued several CD projects involving recordings from Andy's collection.

In 1986 he co-produced, with Alice Gerrard, the record and book project The Old Time Way (Heritage Records), a documentation of the lives and music of Luther Davis, Roscoe Parish, and Leone Parish of Galax.

In the fall of 1986 Andy entered the graduate folklore program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and based most of his academic work on the banjo and fiddle traditions of Grayson and Carroll Co., Va. His most significant research concerned Manly Reese, the earliest known banjo player in southwest Virginia and great-uncle to renowned Galax fiddler Kahle Brewer.

In the 1990s Andy recorded several traditional musicians in Chatham County N.C., most notably blues guitarist Jack Headen of Goldston and fiddler Vance Reese of Pittsboro.

In addition to traditional American music, Andy Cahan has had a parallel interest in China since early childhood. He is a sinologist specializing in pre-1976 commercial graphics and has authored two books on the history and art of Chinese advertising labels.

Andy's most recent work has focused on music of Chinese origin, in particular the popular music of the 1930s through 1990s. On five trips to Macau and Hong Kong between 1996 and 2001, he recorded and videotaped traditional and modern Chinese musicians, in particular blind street musicians of Macau. Other photo and video work there included documentation of Macau's defunct fireworks industry and the fast disappearing old sections of the city.

His current project involves a CD of his own interpretations of Chinese songs from the twentieth century, on which he plays on harmonicas, fiddle, banjo, guitar, and percussion.
