Abstract The Bruce Greene and Hilary Dirlam Collection consists of audio recordings, documentation, and photographs of Anglo-American old-time musicians from western North Carolina. The materials were created and compiled by musicians, Bruce Greene and Hilary Dirlam, as part of a 1992 North Carolina Arts Council folklife documentary grant. The audio recordings primarily consist of field recordings and interviews by musicians from Avery County, Buncombe County, Mitchell County, and Yancey County, including Steve Ledford, Luke Smathers String Band, and Red Wilson.

Robert Bruce Greene is known for preserving and playing old-time Kentucky fiddle music. He is also an old-time banjo player, singer, fiddle teacher, and collector of traditional Appalachian music and culture. Greene moved to Yancey County in western North Carolina in 1978 and often performs locally with other old-time musicians in and around Yancey County, including Rob Levin, Don Pedi, and with his partner, Loy McWhirter.

Old-time musician Hilary Dirlam has been a resident of North Carolina for more than twenty-five years. Dirlam has made contributions to the region's music, both in her own playing and through her preservation efforts. She played bass for both the Carroll Best Band and Luke Smathers' Swing Band, and has performed and recorded with other old-time musicians, including Bruce Greene and Peter Sutherland.

The Bruce Greene and Hilary Dirlam Collection consists of audio recordings, documentation, and photographs of Anglo-American old-time musicians from western North Carolina. The materials were created and compiled by musicians, Bruce Greene and Hilary Dirlam, as part of a 1992 North Carolina Arts Council folklife documentary grant.

Audio recordings are on audiocassette and consist of original field recordings and interviews made by Bruce Greene and Hilary Dirlam, as well as dubbed recordings compiled by Greene and Dirlam for research purposes. The recordings primarily consist of field recordings and interviews by old-time musicians from Avery County, Buncombe County, Mitchell County, and Yancey County, including Steve Ledford, Luke Smathers String Band, and Red Wilson.

Documentation and papers correspond to the recordings and include a tape index, tape logs, as well as scattered clippings, articles, and ephemera related to the musicians featured on the recordings. Tape logs consist of brief artist biographies and song titles.

Color and Black and White photographs depict old-time musicians from western North Carolina, including Wesley Crowder, Thomas Hunter, Rex Stewart, Russell Stewart, and Katherine Walton. The majority of the photographs were taken by David Holt of High Windy Productions.
