expand/collapse Expand/collapse Biographical Information

Ed Solomon (1932-2017) was involved in American folk and bluegrass music scenes as a manager and promoter for over fifty years. Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie sparked Ed's interest in folk music when he saw them perform at a baseball game in Staten Island, N.Y. Shortly after that, Ed hired Pete Seeger to perform at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, N.Y. when Ed was a student there. Ed later became the manager for banjoists, Roger Sprung and Paul Cadwell, as well as for the old-time country duo, Harry and Jeannie West. He also occasionally emceed at bluegrass festivals, and became friends with many well-known performers, particularly Bill Monroe. Monroe performed at his son Bruce's Bar Mitvah and also gave Ed's son, Arnie, mandolin lessons. Being a manager and promoter led Ed to many festivals and concerts in the Northeast and South, where he made the live recordings found in his collection.
