About 331 archived websites.

Websites are organized into groups by subject; groups are presented alphabetically. Group names refer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill unless indicated otherwise.

During the 2017 to 2018 academic year, students and other activists organized protests calling for the removal of the Confederate monument (known as "Silent Sam") on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. The protests began with a rally on 22 August 2017 and a subsequent continuous sit-in until 31 August 2017. The following year, on 20 August 2018, a rally protesting the monument was held on McCorkle Place and on Franklin Street. Protestors toppled the monument from its pedestal at approximately 9:20pm on 20 August 2018. In December 2018, activists organized a grade strike in response to the Board of Trustees proposed plan for the monument’s disposition. The Board of Governors rejected the Trustee’s proposal in December 2018. In January 2019, Chancellor Carol Folt ordered the removal of the monument’s pedestal and resigned. A variety of rallies and protests occurred between December 2018 and May 2019.

On November 27, 2019, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors announced a settlement regarding the disposition of the UNC-Chapel Hill Confederate monument. Among other terms, the settlement granted the North Carolina Division Sons of Confederate Veterans, Inc., ownership of the monument and a $2.5 million charitable trust for expenses related to care of the monument. On 12 February 2020, Orange County Superior Court Judge Allen Baddour overturned the settlement ruling that the NC SVC lacked standing to bring the lawsuit against UNC.

Over this period, a number of public statements about the protest and the disposition of the monument were made by activists, students, UNC faculty and staff, elected officials and administrators, alumni, and the public. This collection includes many of the statements in the form of editorials, webpages, tweets, and Google documents. The collection also includes news articles from The News & Observer, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and more. The collection also includes other online materials such as activist websites, editorial cartoons, and Facebook event pages.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Nikole Hannah-Jones Tenure Case Collected Websites and Documents, 2021.

96 archived websites, 14 PDF files.

On May 19, 2021, NC Policy Watch published a special report revealing that journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones would no longer be offered a tenured position as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism with the UNC-Chapel Hill Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Instead, the article noted that Hannah-Jones would be offered the position on a five-year contract as the UNC Board of Trustees had not taken action to approve the tenure recommendation. Over the next several weeks, students, staff and faculty, as well as individuals not affiliated with UNC, released statements in support of tenure for Hannah-Jones. Protests were held at Board of Trustees’ meetings demanding the Board vote on the tenure case. Speculation that UNC donor Walter Hussman Jr. and conservative legislators sought to deny tenure because of Hannah-Jones’ 1619 Project was a focal point of the debate. Ultimately, in June 2021, the Board of Trustees voted to grant tenure to Hannah-Jones. Hannah-Jones declined the offer in July 2021.

This collection contains statements made in support of tenure for Nikole Hannah-Jones, statements made by Hannah-Jones, and select news articles. The collection also contains statements made by Walter Hussman Jr. to the media. The majority of materials were archived as websites, but a selection were collected as PDF documents.
