Acquisitions Information
Received as a gift from Carter Greenlaw Baker, Ailsie Baker McEnteggart, and Georgia Lowell Baker, the grandchildren of Lowell M. Greenlaw (RT 20150701.1). Shirley Greenlaw Baker, daughter of Lowell M. Greenlaw, had been the keeper and organizer of the collection until it was donated by her children to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lowell M. Greenlaw was vice president and general counsel for Pullman, Inc., before retiring and becoming an author. His first book was Georgia Faye: Story of an American Family, about his wife and their life together. He worked for more than ten years on his second book, a biography of his brother, Edwin Greenlaw, who joined the faculty at the University of North Carolina as an English professor in 1913. A distinguished scholar who studied Edmund Spenser, Edwin Greenlaw was among the first group of faculty chosen for Kenan professorships. He served as graduate school dean from 1920 to 1925, when he resigned to teach at Johns Hopkins University. Edwin Greenlaw co-edited Literature and Life (1926), a high school reading course published by Scott, Foresman and Company. Lowell M. Greenlaw died in 1968 before completing the biography.

The Lowell M. Greenlaw Papers document the nearly two-decade long research and writing of a biography of Edwin Greenlaw, the older brother of Lowell M. Greenlaw and a former professor of English literature and dean of the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina. The collection includes correspondence Lowell M. Greenlaw exchanged with former students and colleagues of Edwin Greenlaw at the University of North Carolina and Johns Hopkins University; a draft of the unpublished two-volume biography "Edwin Greenlaw, Teacher and Scholar"; research notes compiled by Lowell M. Greenlaw; published writings by Edwin Greenlaw; memorials of Edwin Greenlaw; research and correspondence of Edwin Greenlaw for Literature and Life, a high school reading course he co-edited with Dudley Miles, et al; and three University of North Carolina campus maps.
