expand/collapse Expand/collapse Collection Overview

Size 1 item
Abstract Photograph album given to white North Carolina State Treasurer and President of the University of North Carolina Kemp Plummer Battle, as a gift given to him upon his retirement from the University. The album contains some of the earliest photographic views depicting campus known to exist. Subjects depicted in photographs include University of North Carolina buildings, grounds, faculty, staff, students, events, and Black people at the historically white University. Of particular interest are the images depicting three Black laborers; Ben Boothe, Eli Merritt, and Jerry Mason, who worked at the University for many years and interacted with Battle. A handwritten note states that the photographs in the album were taken in 1892, but the album contains materials from earlier in the nineteenth century including a composite image of the 1844 UNC faculty.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Biographical Information

Kemp Plummer Battle (1831-1919) served as North Carolina State Treasurer from 1866 to 1868 and as president of the University of North Carolina from 1876 to 1891. Battle graduated from the University in 1849 as the valedictorian of his class and went on to work as a lawyer and bank director. In 1861, he was a delegate to the Secession Convention, and served during the Civil War as president of the Chatham Railroad. In 1862, Battle was elected trustee of the University; he was elected Treasurer by the legislature in 1866 but removed from office in 1868 because of his service to the Confederacy. He was named president of the University of North Carolina in 1876 and resigned in 1891 to become Alumni Professor of History. Battle compiled a significant body of scholarly work, the most significant being his two-volume History of the University of North Carolina.

expand/collapse Expand/collapse Scope and Content

The Kemp Plummer Battle Photograph Album of the University of North Carolina was owned by Battle and produced by "Foster, Artist and Photographer" of 112 N. Ninth Street in Richmond, Va. The album contains 74 photographs of campus, student organizations, athletics, and the town of Chapel Hill. According to a handwritten note inside the front cover of the album which appears to have been written in 1897, the photographs were taken in 1892; however, some appear to date from as late as 1894. Thus, the album was probably produced circa 1894, however, many or all of the images included are copied from originals which may date from much earlier in the 19th century (e.g., a composite image on Page 8 shows the faculty of 1844).

Descriptions in quotation marks were transcribed from original captions and notes found in the album.
