David French Boyd (1834-1899) was an officer in the Confederate Army who for a time was a prisoner of war on a Union boat moored in Alexandria, La. After the war, Boyd was instrumental in the founding of Lousiana State University.

The collection is a typed transcription of a letter, 7 April 1864, from David French Boyd, then a Confederate prisoner-of-war on a Union boat moored in the Red River at Alexandria, La., to his old friend General William T. Sherman concerning treatment Boyd received in New Orleans, La., and Boyd's views of the war and the South.
