Abstract | Richard Horace Browne was born in Southampton County, Va., in 1830. He graduated from Jefferson College (later Washington and Jefferson College) in 1851. In 1853, he moved to New Orleans, La., to attend the University of Louisiana Law School. After graduating, he remained in New Orleans and practiced law, primarily in United States courts. In March 1862, he joined the Louisiana Guard Artillery (Confederate Guards Response Battalion) commanded by Major Franklin H. Clack. He later served in the Army of Tennessee. After the war, he returned to New Orleans and continued working as a lawyer. The collection includes letters from Lieutenant Browne containing vivid descriptions of military life in various locations, including near Tupelo, Miss., and Confederate camps in Alabama; of troop movements; and of politics within the army. Most letters are addressed to Browne's wife Sarah, who moved from New Orleans to Chattanooga, Tenn., and from Chattanooga to Lowndes County, Miss., in order to avoid the war. The collection also includes a small amount of other family correspondence. |
