Abstract | James Clitherall travelled as an escort to Mary Izard Middleton (Mrs. Arthur) and Henrietta Middleton Rutledge (Mrs. Edward), wives of two members of the Continental Congress, from Charleston, S.C., to Philadelphia, Pa., in April-July 1776. The collection contains transcripts of the diary kept by Clitherall on this trip. Clitherall described land fertility, road conditions, tavern accommodations and entertainment, and leisure-time gatherings of local society on a trip through Camden, S.C.; Charlotte, N.C., Salisbury, N.C., and Guilford Court House, N.C.; Charlotte Court House and Orange Court House, Va.; and Lancaster, Pa. The volume includes the words of two songs, "New Song for Liberty" and "Liberty Song," which the travelers heard at Charlotte, N.C. |
