Lyman Atkinson Cotten (1874-1926) was a United States naval officer. He was educated at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., 1894-1898, and participated in the Spanish-American War, Philippine American War, Boxer Rebellion, and the Naval War College, and served in Japan, China, World War I, and conflicts in the Near East. His wife was Elizabeth Brownrigg Henderson Cotten of Salisbury, N.C.

Cotten, relating to his 32 years of naval service, beginning with his education at the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., 1894-1898, and including his participation in the Spanish-American War, Philippine American War, Boxer Rebellion, and the Naval War College, and his involvement in Japan, China, World War I, and conflicts in the Near East. There are also some personal papers and correspondence, chiefly 1950s, of Cotten's wife, Elizabeth Brownrigg Henderson Cotten, particularly related to mutual friends and interests and family concerns. Included in Mrs. Cotten's papers is a note from e. e. cummings.
