Abstract | Isaac Tompkins was a reading clerk of the United States House of Representatives who operated a stage line between Savannah, Ga., and New York City. The collection contains letters from Tompkins of Binghamton, N.Y., to his wife, Helen Charlotte Backus Tompkins, written while he was traveling in North Carolina and other places. Tompkins discussed Nullification, Willie P. Mangum, agricultural conditions especially in North Carolina, and political events in Washington, D.C., including the tariff debate of 1833. |
