Abstract | Edmund Jones Williams (1841-1926) was a soldier in the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry and the 31st North Carolina Regiment. The collection includes letters from Edmund Jones Williams from locations in North Carolina and Virginia during the Civil War to members of his family in Cumberland County, N.C. Williams wrote from the Virginia Peninsula, 1861; from Sampson, Onslow, Bertie, and other North Carolina counties, 1862-1863; and from Petersburg, Culpeper, and the banks of the Rappahannock in Virginia, May 1863-December 1864. The letters give a detailed picture of camp life and engagements in these locations. |

Edmund Jones Williams (1841-1926) was a soldier in the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry and the 31st North Carolina Regiment. Williams was born at Linden, Cumberland County, N.C. He recieved his medical doctorate from Washington Medical College, Baltimore, Md.

Williams wrote from the Virginia Peninsula, 1861; from Sampson, Onslow, Bertie, and other North Carolina counties, 1862-1863; and from Petersburg, Culpeper, and the banks of the Rappahannock in Virginia, May 1863-December 1864. The letters give a detailed picture of camp life and engagements in these locations. Williams comments on the positions of the forces, an outbreak of measles and malaria, North Carolina crops, and troop movements. He also specifically mentions John B. Magruder, Stoneman's forces, and fighting at Fort Harrison, Va, and French speaking troops from New Orleans, La.
