Abstract The Brower family included John Morehead Brower (1845-1913), Republican United States representative, and Thomas M. Brower (fl. 1876-1877). The collection contains the papers of a Surry County, N.C., family, including a record book of the Hamburg Lodge of the Union League of America, 1867, headed by John Morehead Brower, and a diary kept by Thomas M. Brower on a cross-country railroad trip to California and during his stay at Santa Cruz, 1876-1877.

The collection contains the papers of a Surry County, N.C., family. It includes a record book (Volume 1) of the Hamburg Lodge of the Union League of America, 1867, headed by John Morehead Brower, containing membership, resolutions, committees, election of officers, and other lodge business. Also a diary (Volume 2) kept by Thomas M. Brower on a cross-country railroad trip to California during which he passed through Tensessee; New Orleans, La.; St. Louis, Mo.; Omaha, Neb.; Black Hills, S.D.; and Utah. The diary also describes life in a cabin in Santa Cruz, Calif., with references to hunting, fishing, trading, and saloons. Volume 3 is the continuation of this diary and includes his return journey by way of Cincinnati, Ohio; Washington, D.C.; and Richmond, Va; as well as other trips in North Carolina and Virginia. There is also an account book (Volume 4) of travel expenses.
