Napoleon Jefferson Smith (1841-1921) was a Confederate naval officer. Smith was born in Powhatan County, Va., to Francis S. Smith and Elizabeth Cary Lockett Smith. He was educated at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., but did not graduate due to the outbreak of the Civil War. He was appointed by Jefferson Davis to a post in the Navy of the Confederate States of America.
