Abstract | Mary E. Fries of Salem, N.C., married Rufus L. Patterson (1830-1879) in 1864. The collection is a diary, 1863-1864 and 1911, of Mary Fries Patterson. The earlier volume covers the period of Fries's engagement. Daily entries record visits from her fiance, friends, and relatives, activities at the Presbyterian and Moravian churches, meetings of the Relief Society, and news of Confederate soldiers, as well as her wedding preparations. Both her fiance and her father, Francis Fries, were manufacturers. Entries in the later volume, covering July-December 1911, deal with daily activities, travels, and visits. |

Daily entries record her activities and local events, including visits from her fiance, friends, and relatives, activities at the Presbyterian and Moravian churches, meetings of the Relief Society, neighborhood happenings, weddings, and funerals. She describes aspects of the war that enter her daily life including the travel of Confederate troops through Salem, N.C.; concerts given by regimental bands; and news of dead and wounded among her acquaintances. Frequent mention is made of the members of the Fries, Vogler, Bahnson, Shober, Lemly and other families. Entries in the later volume, covering July-December 1911, deal with daily activities, travels, and visits.
