Abstract | Joseph Hewes (1730-1779) was a signer of the Declaration of Independence from North Carolina and member of the Continental Congress. The collection includes miscellaneous papers, consisting of copies of letters and originals of two letters and a postscript to a third letter from Hewes. The two letters were written from Philadelphia, 6 February and 27 March 1776, to Robert Smith, Williamsburg, Va.; they concern the brig "Fanny," lying in the York River, and arrangements for chartering vessels to go to Europe to procure articles needed by the army and navy and to sell tobacco and other American exports. The postscript, 7 January 1776 [misdated 1775], is to a letter from Hewes to Samuel Johnston; it reports the arrival of vessels with powder and saltpeter. |
