Abstract | William Austine, of Connecticut, was a graduate of the United States Military Academy and an officer with the United States Army in Mexico. The collection contains typed transcriptions of long, detailed letters from Austine, to his cousin, apparently in New Orleans, describing the journey to Mexico from Charleston, S.C.; the towns and countryside of Mexico; military activities; and his personal interests. The letters range from ten to thirty-one single-spaced, typed pages. They were written from Tampico, Vera Cruz, Castle of Perot, Puebla, Mexico City, and at sea off Yucatan. |
