Abstract | Mary Stamps (fl. 1863-1883) of New Orleans, La., was the niece of Jefferson Davis (1808-1889). The collection includes letters from Jefferson Davis to Mary Stamps, 1863 and 1869-1883, concerning family matters, news of friends, and personal difficulties and plans; a letter from Davis to "Hugh," 8 January 1865 about military matters and Confederate problems; and a handwritten transcription of part of a letter from Varina Howell Davis (1826-1906) to Joseph E. Davis, 5 September 1865, about her situation and quoting a letter from her husband. |
