Abstract |
Allen Howard Godbey (1864-1948) of Missouri, was a Methodist minister, Methodist historian,
and teacher, writer, and scholar in the field of the Old Testament, Hebrew history,
archeology, and Semitics, and professor at Duke University, 1926-1932. The collection
includes general and family correspondence, mainly 1900-1948, and writings of Godbey.
Volumes include writings, notebooks, scrapbooks; also financial records of Central
Methodist College at Fayette, Mo., 1900-1909. Materials earlier than 1900 (7 volumes
and a few papers of scattered dates) pertain to the Reverend William Clinton Godbey,
other Methodist preachers, and Methodism in 19th-century Missouri, including a preacher's
diary and record, 1871-1872, on the St. Louis circuit.

Allen Howard Godbey (1864-1948) of Missouri, was a Methodist minister, Methodist historian,
and teacher, writer, and scholar in the field of the Old Testament, Hebrew history,
archeology, and Semitics. He was a professor at Duke University, 1926-1932. His father
was William Clinton Godbey, a Methodist circuit preacher of Missouri.

The collection is chiefly general, family, and genealogical correspondence, mainly
1900-1948, and scholarly writings of Allen Howard Godbey. Scholarly writings are chiefly
on theological, historical, and archeological topics. Volumes include writings, notebooks,
scrapbooks; also financial records of Central Methodist College at Fayette, Mo., 1900-1909.
Materials earlier than 1900 (seven volumes and a few papers of scattered dates) pertain
to the Reverend William Clinton Godbey, other Methodist preachers, and Methodism in
19th-century Missouri, including a preacher's diary and record, 1871-1872, on the
St. Louis circuit. There is also a group of photographs that appear to be related
to Godbey's genealogical inquiries and include members of the Smith and Russell families
and others.
