Abstract | John K. Baldwin was a skilled laborer of Bladen County, N.C., who did carpentry, blacksmithing, and mechanical work, and ran two sawmills. The collection includes a diary, 1867-1878, kept by Baldwin with brief daily entries concerning work activities, money spent for supplies and received for work completed, church attendance, and other matters. The diary begins with an autobiographical statement focusing on Baldwin's service with the 36th North Carolina Regiment in the Civil War. |

John K. Baldwin (b. 1845) was a skilled laborer of Bladen County, N.C. He served in the 36th North Carolina Regiment, Confederate Army, primarily in eastern North Carolina. After the war he worked for the Bladen Land Company which ran two sawmills. He later ran a grist mill and built a shop where he worked as a blacksmith, carpenter, and machinist. He was married to Susan C. Cain.
