Abstract | Lewis Henry Webb of Richmond County, N.C., was a Confederate officer who served with the 23rd North Carolina Regiment in 1861 and in a company that later became part of the 13th North Carolina Light Artillery Batallion, 1862-1865, chiefly in southeastern Virginia. The collection contains a three-volume Civil War diary kept by Webb discussing battles and other military activities, and including religious reflections; his history of Battery A, 13th N.C. Light Artillery Battalion; scattered family letters, including three from his uncle, John Lewis, in Abbeville, Miss., 1862, concerning family and community news; and postwar papers of Webb relating to his interest in Webb family, Lewis family, Griswold family, and Goodrich family history. |

Lewis Henry Webb (occasionally spelled "Louis") of Richmond County, N.C., was a Confederate officer who served with the 23rd North Carolina Regiment in 1861 and in a company that later became part of the 13th North Carolina Light Artillery Batallion, 1862-1865, chiefly in southeastern Virginia. He served for a part of the war period in and near Nansemond and Southampton counties in Virginia, where he met and married Gattie Lawrence. After the war they resided in Virginia, first at South Quay in Nansemond County and later at Franklin in Southampton County. Lewis Henry Webb was the son of William G. Webb, who moved from Rocky Hill, Connecticut, to Richmond County, N.C. His mother was Celestia Goodrich, also from Connecticut.
