Abstract | T. D. (Thomas Dillard) Johnston (1840-1902) was a lawyer and businessman of Asheville, N.C. Johnston held various political offices, including mayor of Asheville, 1868; state representative, 1870-1874; state senator, 1876; and United States representative, 1885-1889. The papers of T. D. Johnston consist chiefly of political and business correspondence in the 1870s when he was a leading Democratic member of the North Carolina legislature. Also included are Johnston's notes on the law lectures of Richmond Mumford Pearson; antebellum papers of his father, William Johnston of Waynesville in Haywood County, N.C., including a book of poems written to members of the family (on microfilm); minutes of the Spartanburg, S.C., Methodist Sunday School Relief Society, 1861-1863; a scrapbook, 1862-1864; and a typed copy of the Dillard family history. The collection does not relate to T. D. Johnston's career as a United States representative, 1885-1889. |

Thomas Dillard Johnston (1840-1902) was a lawyer and businessman of Asheville, N.C. Johnston held various political offices, including mayor of Asheville, 1868; state representative, 1870-1874; state senator, 1876; and United States representative, 1885-1889. Johnston was born in Waynesville, N.C. and was educated at Colonel Stephen D. Lee's school and the University of North Carolina, 1858-1859.
