Abstract | Mary Elizabeth Mitchell was the daughter of Dr. Charles J. Mitchell and Mary Davis Mitchell and the granddaughter of Joseph E. Davis (died 1870), older brother of Jefferson Davis. The collection includes a typed transcription of the journal of Mary Elizabeth "Lise" Mitchell, 1862-1865 and 1867, at Fleetwood Plantation in Mississippi and at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Journal entries contain many references to her great-uncle Jefferson Davis and his family. Also included are transcriptions of family letters, including several from her parents, Mary (Davis) Mitchell and Dr. Charles J. Mitchell, 1838-1839, who were living in Paris, France, while Dr. Mitchell completed his medical studies; several from her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Davis of Hurricane Plantation in Mississippi, 1845-1849, discussing family affairs; and others, 1865-1870, from various persons, including Jefferson and Varina Davis, discussing family fortunes during Reconstruction. |
