Armistead Burwell (1839-1913) was a lawyer of Charlotte, N.C., state senator, and North Carolina supreme court judge. He was the son of Reverend Robert Burwell and Margaret Anna Robertson Burwell. He was educated at Davidson College and was teaching in Princeton, Ark., in 1861 when he joined the Confederate Army, serving with the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, and becoming captain on the staff of General F. C. Armstrong. He began the practice of law in Charlotte, N.C., 1869, in various partnerships with Calvin E. Grier, Zebulon B. Vance, Platt D. Walker, and E. T. Cansler. He was also director of the North Carolina Railroad. He married Ella Jenkins of Salisbury, N.C., a sister of Mrs. Eben Nye Hutchinson of Charlotte. They had three children, Armistead Burwell Junior, Birdie (Mrs. Richard C.) Carson, and Fannie (Mrs. Word H.) Wood.
