Abstract | John L. Brown (b. 1829) was a Charlotte, N.C., merchant and state legislator. The collection contains Civil War papers, including letters from John M. Tate and W. E. Stitt, two of Brown's friends in the Confederate Army in Virginia and eastern North Carolina. Tate was with the 11th North Carolina Regiment. Their letters discuss finances, supplies, news of friends, camp life, and battles. Also included are correspondence with the North Carolina Subsistence Department and other items concerning supplying provisions to the state; and some political correspondence, chiefly about the establishment of a pro-Confederate newspaper to oppose Governor W. W. Holden. |

Tate was with the 11th North Carolina Regiment. Their letters discuss finances, supplies, investments, illness, news of friends, camp life, battles, and personal and official requests. Also mentioned are the death of Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson, May 1863, and the Union treatment of Confederate wounded, July 1863. Also included are correspondence with and orders and receipts from the North Carolina Subsistence Department and other items concerning supplying provisions to the state; and some political correspondence, chiefly about the establishment of a pro-Confederate newspaper to oppose Governor W. W. Holden. Political correspondents include A. M. Gorman, Thomas Bragg, and John M. Tate. There are also business letters and papers regarding North Carolina financial legislation including a petition, 1864, to the State Assembly from citizens of Mecklenburg County, N.C., regarding tax law.
