Abstract | Sallie Rowan Saufley, daughter of Stokeley Donelsen Rowan of McMinnville, Tenn., married Micah C. Saufley (1842-1910), lawyer of Monticello and Stanford, Ky., in 1867. The collection is letters she received from family members. It includes letters, 1864-1867, from Micah C. Saufley before the two married, describing his experiences as a Confederate soldier imprisoned at Fort Delaware, Del., his law studies and practice in Louisville and Monticello, Ky., and postwar conflicts of northern and southern sympathizers in Kentucky, and letters from Sallie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Stokeley Donelson Rowan, in McMinnville, Tenn., after she married in 1867. Also included are letters, 1907-1916, from her son, Richard Caswell Saufley, United States naval officer, as a student at the United States Naval Academy, at sea, and as an aviator at Pensacola, Fla., about his military activities, his opinion of political affairs, and other matters. |
