Abstract | The Sumner family of Gates County, N.C., traces its lineage to William Summer of England who settled near Suffolk, Va., around 1690. His descendent, Ellen Sumner, married C. H. McKenzie. The collection contains scattered papers of the McKenzie family of Rowan County, N.C., and the Sumner family, including estate settlements and inventories, and family correspondence, including a letter, 1869, from Philo White (1796-1883), New York editor and diplomat, discussing his activities and political and economic issues in New York and the nation. |

The Sumner family of Gates County, N.C., traces its lineage to William Summer of England who settled near Suffolk, Va., around 1690. Among his descendents are General Jethro Sumner (1733-1785), and Colonel Jethro Sumner (born 1758), Benjamin Sumner, Benjamin H. Sumner, and Ellen Sumner. Ellen Sumner married C. H. McKenzie. Other members of the McKenzie family of Rowan County, N.C., include Montford Stokes McKenzie and his brother-in-law, Philo White (1796-1883), a New York editor and diplomat.
