Abstract The collection is a letter, 25 October 1810, from Martin L. Haynie in St. Francisville, La., to John Ballinger, who was in command at a fort on the present site of Baton Rouge. Haynie discussed his role in stirring up sentiment for revolt against the Spanish among the American inhabitants in the region; a contemplated expedition against the Spanish at Pensacola, Fla.; and his thoughts about a "new republic," which might replace Spanish rule. Haynie also indicated that he would soon travel to Baltimore, his birthplace.
